Description: Ryan Cary will be returning as the instructor of this hands-on math class. New students are welcome and returning students are encouraged to continue so that they can discover the true potential of this instrument.  Ryan uses a specific abacus that must be rented from him during the class semester. Your deposit will be returned when the gently used abacus is handed in.

Ballet (E)

Description: Marissa Crook, who is 12 years old and in her 8th year of ballet, will be teaching this enjoyable beginning ballet class.  5-8 year old ballerinas will become familiar with traditional ballet warm-up exercises and stretches, barre and center work, with some fun, simple, dances thrown in.  These dancers will be performing at the showcase party at the end of the year. Rose Hodges will assist. Please bring:  ballet shoes with tights or socks and a water bottle. Hair must be in a bun or one ponytail in the back for long hair or 2 pigtails for very short hair.    Suggested dress:  leotard, princess or fairy dress-up, t-shirt and shorts.

A Blast from the Past (A)

Description: A Blast from the Past (50's - 90's) Have you ever wondered what parachute pants were, what is a "cold war" or who John Lennon was?  Join Patti Poston and Nancy Smith in discovering the fads, culture, politics and science inventions of the 50's, 60's, 70's and more.  Students will be creating presentations about a topic from each decade to present to the class.  They will be given time in class to create the presentation.  Homework:  Gather research materials on what they wish to present and bring that to class. (Internet articles, library books, encyclopedias etc.)   Presentations will be created in class.

Intro to Chautauqua (A)

Description: Chautauqua is a combination speech and history class. In this class you will choose a historical character to study and research. You will receive coaching in research, delivery, time lines and question and answer techniques. At the end of the class each student will present a 5 to 10 minute monologue of their character in costume and be able to answer questions in and out of character. Students ages 8 to 18 are welcome. This program offers a fun way to learn history and become a part of it. Taught by Chautauqua and speech coach, Randy Hodges. Other expenses will include costuming.

Chess (E)

Description: The Chess course will focus on teaching the history of the game, the basic moves of the game, and will give the students playing time to try out what they have learned. Each class with teach at least one new move during the first 10 minutes of class. The remaining time will be dedicated to one-on-one play. The class will divide the students according to age and skill level. The tone of the course will be biblical edification focusing on mutual support of classmates rather than winning. If you have a chess set, bring it to class, but do not feel you have to buy one as I will bring extra sets to class with me. Instructor Jason Daniels led the chess club for a homeschool group in Oregon.

Drama (E)

Description: Laurie Perez will direct the play, “The Happy Tale of the Three Little Creatures and the Clock Flowers" - an original musical by Ann Murphy Bloomquist (Laurie Perez’s mother). This is a short play with 3 songs featuring the children as various garden flowers and small animals. You’ll see how the different flowers join with the animal parents to help their baby squirrels, birdies and chipmunks get home on time!  The students will gain experience performing in front of a live audience as well as practice reading, memorizing just a few speaking lines and 3 songs.  The children will also participate in creating their very simple costumes.  The play will be performed at the end of the year Showcase Night on May 15th. We need a minimum of 10 students, both boys and girls, but would love to have many more!!

Description: Eric Momberg, Prevost, provides an introduction to the sport and art of fencing. Areas to be covered include offensive, defensive and counter-offensive theory and rules governing fencing. Students will participate in drills and bouts. Gear will be provided for class time. This class is for boys and girls! Foil and Saber are offered, but Saber is available only to students who have taken fencing at EAGLE. Class is limited.

Description: A continuation of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) curriculum where young writers will use short writings to develop outlines, give speeches, summarize their notes into a written paragraph, and summarize short fictional stories.  The class will incorporate the IEW stylistic techniques of dress-ups into all writings and begin to introduce sentence openers. This is a class to develop competency, independence and creativity in writing - NOT an exercise in HANDwriting - and may require parent participation to do the actual writing/typing. Mandatory work to do at home to ensure we all progress! Must be able to read. Geared towards returning students or students with some IEW experience, but new students welcome. Teacher: Kelley Radow. Description: The experienced teachers at the “Woodcraft” store will be leading our students. They will cover the following topics during the 12 week class: safety, tools - hand and power and when they are used, woods of the world - soft and hard, domestic and exotic, with examples of many different types, and how to plan a project. Projects will run multiple weeks and will provide items for students to take home. Class will end with a pen turning opportunity for every student to turn a pen on a lathe. Writing for Publication (A)

Description: Writing for Publication introduces students to the steps and process of seeking publication for short stories, books and other forms of writing.  This is NOT a "how to write" class, but rather presumes students are already passionate about writing and grounded in writing basics.  This class offers a guided tour of how to seek publication opportunities, while learning about query letters, proposals and more.  We will talk about a few homeschool students who have successfully become published authors. We will strive to have each student, either individually or in groups, submit writing pieces to at least one youth writing contest during the course of the class and will provide resources to help students independently submit to other potential markets.

Young Rembrandts Art (E)

Description: This winter we begin with many engaging lessons focusing on the familiar and possibly new things.  We start by creating our own, original birthday cake, full of candles and many layers.  We then think of a warmer climate as we draw a complex perspective scene with palm trees as our focus.  We continue to work on our integral drawing skills as we learn about penguins.  We follow with an intricate drawing of an owl complete with many line variations and complexity – and no color!  We end the session with a series of art history lessons and complete our own masterpieces in the style of Van Gogh and Monet using chalk pastel.
